Right-on! It is the mastering and over-wrought production that annoys me about most modern releases. They master the life right out of the music. And there's good stuff in that music that gives it character, like hearing Duane Allman's breathing on "Little Martha" or Bonzo's squeaky drum pedal on "Since I've Been Loving You". I think the focus in the vinyl era was either to treat you to a sonic experience or make you feel that you were with the band during the recording. But maybe again there's also the technology factor. In the day, a record was mastered to play on one piece of equipment, the home Hi-Fi, whose speakers were enevitably built with an equalization bias to make the stereo "sound good". There was a built in standard in the production. Now, there are a variety of formats a digitized piece of music may be played on, with many different sound characteristics present, so there is a loss of objectivity from the production side as they try to gain maximum sonic density from the studio side.
